Many people interested in the German language ask themselves: how long does it take to become fluent in German? The answer to this question depends on many factors, such as personal learning goal, learning motivation, learning method and learning environment.

What does language learning depend on?

There is no general recipe for language learning, because everyone learns differently and has different prerequisites and goals. Some factors that can influence language learning are:

The learning goal:

Do you just want to learn a few words and phrases for a holiday or prepare for an exam? Depending on the language level you want to achieve, the learning time can vary.

The motivation to learn:

How much do you enjoy learning and how important is it for you to master the language? A high motivation to learn can accelerate and facilitate learning.

The learning method:

What materials and exercises do you use to learn? How often do you repeat what you have learned? How much time do you invest in learning per day or per week? An effective learning method is crucial for successful learning.

The learning environment:

Where and with whom does one learn the language? Is there contact with native speakers or other learners? Can one use and practise the language in everyday life? An authentic and interactive learning environment can improve one’s sense of language and boost one’s self-confidence.

Why do people learn particularly quickly in Germany or Austria?

One of the best ways to learn a language is to travel to a country where the language is spoken. This way you can not only hear and speak the language, but also get to know the culture and the people. This makes learning more exciting and lively.

    • .

      • Germany and Austria are ideal destinations for learners of German because they offer a variety of landscapes, cities, sights and activities. For example, you can visit the historic buildings in Berlin or Vienna, enjoy nature in the Black Forest or the Alps, try the culinary specialities such as Bratwurst or Sachertorte, or take part in one of the many festivals such as the Oktoberfest or the Vienna Opera Ball.
      • In Germany or Austria, you can also find many opportunities to practise the language. For example, you can take part in a language course, visit a host family, make friends with locals or other learners or join a club or group. In this way, one can not only improve one’s language skills, but also expand one’s intercultural skills.

How are our intensive courses structured?

If you want to learn German in Germany or Austria, we offer you different intensive courses. Our intensive courses consist of 20 or 30 lessons per week. One lesson lasts 45 minutes. Our courses are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which defines six language levels from A1 to C2.

In most language schools we need 8 weeks per course level. This means that from A1 to C1 you need 40 weeks.

In some schools, a level takes longer or shorter. This has advantages and disadvantages:

      • If we take 10-12 weeks per level, it means that the material is repeated more often and is deepened. We recommend this solution for people who are not pressed for time. Learning is more relaxed and stress-free. You also have more time to practice and enjoy the language outside of the course.
      • If we take 6 weeks per level, it means that the material is taught faster and there is less repetition. We recommend this solution for people who want to achieve a specific learning goal in a short time. The learning is more intense and challenging. You also have to show more initiative to practise and consolidate the language on your own. This option is particularly recommended for people who are used to concentrated learning, who are preparing to study in Germany, for example.
